If you had told me when I started my career that I would be working for a company focused on creating a goals platform, I probably would have given you a funny, unsure look. Not because I didn’t think setting goals was important, but because I didn’t see the need for software dedicated to setting and maintaining goals.
Well, after being in the workforce for more than 10 years I have noticed two things in my career. First, no matter how big or small the company is, getting the entire workforce aligned on the company’s strategic objectives is extremely difficult. In some cases, processes are not set up to clearly describe the company’s vision. In other cases, the company goals are filtered down through various layers of management, making them muddled or completely different from where they started off. Second, the lack of transparency in traditional goal setting processes creates an unintended political environment that has viral effects on prohibiting company progress.
Although I grew increasingly frustrated working in these environments, I thought these were normal hurdles that were almost impossible to overcome. Then I came across BetterWorks. BetterWorks has taken a logical, fresh approach on driving transparency and organizational alignment. The goal-setting platform makes goals central to how companies operate and adds social elements to keep employees engaged and up to date on how the company is doing.
This may sound like a simple solution to an age-old problem, but after finishing my first two weeks at BetterWorks, I have been blown away by how powerful the platform is. I was immediately able to see what the company objectives were and how my teammates and I fit into the big picture. In my short time at BetterWorks, I have seen numerous customer testimonials come in with similar sentiments. The BetterWorks platform is changing the way the companies work and is driving organizational alignment and execution.What makes me most excited about all of this is we are just getting started. With the information that is gathered in the BetterWorks platform, we can provide employees numerous tools for working better. One of those tools is mobile. With the advent of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies, enterprise mobile apps have always struggled to find a place in employees’ personal phones. Either the information is a regurgitation of what they can find in email or desktop portals, or they see enterprise apps as an “invasion” of personal time on their device. Entering BetterWorks as a Mobile Product Manager, I’m excited to tackle these issues and work on finding new ways to bridge the gap between enterprise and mobile. Using Goal Science, we can provide insights through mobile that are uniquely captured by the BetterWorks platform. As an example, we can provide managers context for their 1:1s with team members, and provide individual contributors actionable insights on developing their careers.
All of this is just the tip of the iceberg. These are the types of tools I would have loved when I started my career 10 years ago, and I can’t wait to work with our amazing, growing team (come join us) to make them reality!
