National Employee Appreciation Day is coming up this Friday, March 6th! Employers in all industries will focus their attention on employee recognition and celebrating the achievements and hard work of their employees.

Employees are a company’s greatest asset, and Employee Appreciation Day is the perfect opportunity to show your workers how much you care about them. This isn’t just a nice thing to do; recognition and appreciation are two of the key motivational factors in the workplace. Ensuring your employees feel appreciated increases their morale, boosts engagement and reduces turnover.

With that in mind, here are a few ways that you can show your employees how much you value their contributions!

Give them Specific Recognition for their Individual Achievements

Sadly, nearly 80% of employees don’t feel that recognition is given enough in the workplace. Your employees work hard for you, and they need to feel that work is seen and felt. Recognition can come in many forms. Verbal recognition with specific praise or even a simple thank you is an easy and quick way to help any team member feel seen and recognized. Make sure that this recognition is specific to them; a “great job everyone!” is not the way to go here. Do your best to appreciate the individual’s contributions and tie your recognition to those specific achievements; Betterworks can help make the process of giving recognition easy!

Tie Their Contributions to the Big Picture

A sense of purpose is one of the most powerful motivators for any employee. DDI’s Global Leadership Forecast report defines purpose as “an aspirational reason for being that inspires and provides a call to action for the organization, its partners, stakeholders, and society as a whole.” In other words, it serves as an exceptional unifier.

In honor of Employee Appreciation Day, take some time this week to communicate to your employees how their work positively impacts the business as a whole. Just make sure you don’t stop there; motivation isn’t a one-time event, be sure to reinforce that recognition throughout the year.

Look for Ongoing Opportunities to Give Public Recognition

At Betterworks, we believe that every day should be Employee Appreciation Day. Your people are the lifeblood of your business, so making sure they feel seen and valued should happen at every possible opportunity.

It’s important to remember that recognition shouldn’t just come from the top down. Manager to employee recognition is obviously important, but employees should also feel free to give recognition to their managers and their peers. By making recognition more visible, you boost its impact; people want to be respected and valued by others for their contribution. Everyone feels the need to be recognized as an individual or member of a group and to feel a sense of achievement for work well done or even for a valiant effort, so take opportunities to do that throughout the year and on an ongoing basis. Your employees will feel more successful and more engaged.

We’re Celebrating Recognition!

Appreciation is a fundamental human need and as such should be core to your employee’s experience. Team members respond to appreciation expressed through recognition of their good work because it confirms their work is valued by others. When employees feel valued, their satisfaction and productivity rises and they are motivated to seek higher levels of achievement.

One of our core values at Betterworks is living what we preach. In the spirit of Employee Recognition Day, Betterworks will celebrate the company that gives the most recognition to their employees using the Betterworks Recognition feature during the week of March 2nd – 6th by donating to a charity of their choice on their behalf. In addition, we will be publicly recognizing the top three companies who Betterworks with shout outs on our social channels, so stay tuned for that.

Happy Employee Recognition Day from all of us at Betterworks!
